Ujima Brand Identity
Ujima is a non-profit pay-what-you-can service provider that provides equitable access to food, education, and employment. They host [ComeUnity] Tables, virtual cooking classes, and cook meals for the St. Louis community. Through these efforts they host paid learning experiences for St. Louis Area high school and college students who focus on culinary and agriculture projects. Ujima is a labor of love, the name itself originating from the third principle of Kwanzaa: “collective work and responsibility.”
Ujima wanted a logo that embodied community and empowerment, and reflected their passion for environmental stewardship. The final creation is a logotype I drew by hand with care. The ‘J’ and ‘I’ letterforms represent the work of rooting, both in agriculture and within the community. The brand colors are warm, organic, and are paired with speckled textures to bring out a natural touch.
